Criteria and Systematics for the Selection of Scholarship Applicants (Master and Doctorate)

This proposal aims to establish academic criteria and a systematic process for selecting candidates for Master's and Doctoral scholarships offered by CAPES and CNPq to the Graduate Program in Spanish Language and Spanish & Hispanic-American Literatures. The proposal seeks to prevent the selection process from being conducted within the abbreviated deadlines stipulated by CAPES and CNPq, which often make it impossible to select scholarship recipients based on clearly academic criteria.

While the proposal aims to prevent decisions from being made under the pressure of tight deadlines, it also requires efforts from faculty and students interested in scholarships to maintain an updated ranked list of Master's scholarship candidates and another list of Doctoral scholarship candidates. Thus, the proposed system implies integrated work between faculty and students.

For this proposal to be implemented, it is essential that the selection and ranking be conducted in March and August. When CAPES and/or CNPq scholarships become available, they will automatically be awarded to the top-ranked candidates on the list. If the first-ranked candidate declines, the scholarship will be offered to the second-ranked candidate, and so on.

Section for Students Interested in Scholarships:

Students interested in a scholarship must apply within the deadlines established by the Program, submitting the following documents:

  1. Graduate Academic Transcript

  2. Research Project

  3. Current research stage and determination of next steps

  4. Declaration regarding employment status (if applicable, specifying weekly working hours)

  5. If applicable: Self-declaration form for Black, Mixed-Race, or Indigenous (PPI) candidates

In addition to the above documents, when submitting their application, each student must sign an acknowledgment form regarding general information about the scholarship system.

Committee Composition:

The Committee will be composed of three professors – one from each sub-area – and a student representative. The Area Coordinator will be a member of the Committee as a member of the sub-area to which he/she is affiliated. Thus, the Committee will include the participation of a Spanish Language professor, a Spanish Literature professor, a Hispanic-American Literature professor and a student representative. It should be noted that, although the aforementioned committee is appointed annually, it is of a floating nature, since the non-endogenous criterion is respected, which is: in the event that a member of the committee has a student applying for a scholarship, the professor on the committee will be replaced by another who does not present such a situation. The Scholarship Committee will be valid for one year and will meet in February and August to examine the documentation of interested candidates and select them.

Selection Process:

The Committee will read and analyze all research projects and documentation submitted by candidates, assigning points to each student, which will serve as the basis for the ranked list.

The evaluation criteria for the submitted documentation are as follows:

  1. Research Project (endorsed by the advisor): Evaluation of writing quality, coherence, clarity of objectives, and theoretical foundation – 4 points

  2. Current Research Stage and Next Steps – 3 points

  3. Graduate Academic Transcript – 3 points

In case of a tie between two or more candidates, the tiebreaker will be based on criteria deemed appropriate by the Committee (e.g., scholarship rotation, support for specific research areas, candidates without employment commitments, etc.).

Of the total scholarships received and/or allocated during the year, the Program reserves 20% for candidates who submit the PPI (Black, Mixed-Race, or Indigenous) self-declaration form during the application period.

Additionally, in compliance with CAPES Ordinance No. 133 of July 10, 2023, the Program allows students to hold employment of up to 20 weekly hours and to concurrently receive another scholarship.
