About Postgraduate Disciplines

It is necessary to take a certain number of courses as part of the postgraduate program. For the Master's degree, the minimum number of credits in courses is 16. This number is usually met by taking 2 to 3 courses of those normally offered at Letras-USP (which usually have 6 to 8 credits each). For the Doctorate, the minimum number of credits is 24, which is generally met by taking 3 to 4 courses. For the Direct Doctorate, the minimum number of credits is 40. The total number of credits in courses is not high: the focus of our stricto sensu Postgraduate Program (Master's and Doctorate) is on the development of an individual research project, a path in which one builds one's own knowledge and, mainly, autonomy in research and scientific production. Accordingly, the number of credits for Scheduled Readings is higher than the number of courses to be taken. There are no mandatory courses. Each student decides with their advisor which courses are of interest for their project among those offered. In addition to taking courses offered by the Program, students can take courses in other Programs, whether they are from the Arts, FFLCH, USP, or even from other universities that allow validation at USP (consult the Graduate Service for procedures to take courses outside USP, if this is of interest to you).

Below we provide a comprehensive list of accredited courses, taught by permanent professors of our Program, and divided by Disciplines (Spanish Language, Spanish Literature and Hispanic-American Literature). Each semester, some courses are offered from each sub-area. The presentation we provide here serves only as an indication to guide the reader regarding the prevailing trends in the Area and the teaching and research paths that they have led to.
